Portugal is not particularly famous for any one crag and it might not be your first choice as a climbing destination. However, it’s certainly a great place to climb when on holiday as it does have a good selection of high-quality smaller crags. Oh, and don’t forget to take your surfboard as Portugal is your ideal destination for that combined climb and surf trip!
Portugal has around 25 crags and bouldering areas, some of which have really great climbing and are most certainly worth visiting. There are crags near Lisbon, in the north of Portugal, and in the sunny Algarve. The Rock Climbing Atlas describes the most worthwhile areas, in terms of size, variety of routes, beauty, and ease of access and accommodation.
